Swami Karpatri was born in 1905 at Bhatni of Pratapgarh and died in 1980. He was a monk in the Hindu dashanami monastic tradition. He is also known as Hariharananda Saraswati. After three years of Tap in icy caves of Himalaya he ordained as a monk. He spent most of his life in Varanasi. He worked as a teacher in Advaita Vedanta tradition of Hindu philosophy.

Life history

Generally he was named as the Hariharananda Saraswati, but popularly, he was known as the Swami Karpatri. He was a married person and has kids. He was the father of a baby girl when he had left his home at just 17 in order to search for the ordination as a sannyasi. He had spent his many years of learning into the icy caves of the Himalaya. Generally, he was called as a monk. He was a great follower of the Shankaracharya of Jyotirmath. He had founded Dharma Sangha in Varanasi city (City of God). He lived his life in Benares for many years. He was a teacher of the Hindu philosophy of Advaita Vedanta tradition and Shri Vidya.

He had founded the Ram Rajya Parishad (a most famous traditionalist Hindu party) in the year 1948. According to the French indoligist (Alain Danielou), Karpatri Ji had instigated him into the Shaivite Hinduism.

The ashram of the Swami Karpatri Ji Maharaj is placed at the Durgakund, Varanasi, U.P. It is located about 4 km distance from the Cantt railway station. This Ashram at Durgakund was first started by the Hariharananda Saraswati generally called as the Karpatri Swami. A Bhakti Mandal for the Dharm Samrat Karpatri Ji Maharaj has been created in order to unite all the followers of the Swami and spread his experiences. Some educational institutions are started by the Karpatri Swami in Varanasi (phone no. +91-542-2311013).
