The centre of Bharat Kala Bhavan evolved in January in the year 1920. The first Hony. Chairman here was great poet Rabindranath Tagore and the Vice-Chairman was his nephew Silpacharya Abanindranth Tagore. But, actually the whole credit for the origination of internationally famous museum the Bharat Kala Bhavan and its further development goes to Padmavibhushan Late Rai Krishnadasa. He was a renowned Hindi writer and a great pioneer.
The museum has a history of steady growth, though it has modest collection. In the present it holds more than 100,000 memorable collection including oldest archaeological materials, paintings, decorative art, personalia collections, textiles, costumes, Indian philately as well as literary and the archival materials. Most of the collections have historical importance and aesthetically beautiful with uniqueness. Its name and fame is just because of its priceless collections of archaeological materials and greatest collections of miniature paintings. The visitors there are university students, alumni, research scholars and teachers.
